The Kooikerhondje's character

Kooikerhondjes are affectionate, attentive and intelligent dogs. They are calm and content in the house, but need sufficient physical and mental activity. In order to maintain their zest for life and ability to learn, balanced, calm and confident leadership based on a close bond and reward-based training is a prerequisite. Arguments, loud words and harshness are out of place. This will only result in Kooikerhondjes becoming frightened and possibly unpredictable.

Punishments that may be given at the wrong moment and that the dog associates incorrectly are dangerous and their consequences cannot be predicted! Kooikerhondjes internalise everything negative that they experience in the vicinity of their human. The consequence of this is that Kooikerhondjes flee and do not seek the protection of their human. No dog can control its actions and emotions indefinitely or suppress its natural needs, even humans would burst at some point and react disproportionately!

It is important to observe a Kooikerhondje and focus on positive behaviour. Nothing can be taken for granted! With lots of praise and encouragement at the right moment and consistent leadership, the Kooikerhondje will give your human a lot of attention and trust - for life!
